I’ve been working with ASSOS for several years now and during that time, the company has just exploded. As a brand, they’ve always held an important place in the history of cycling, from their beginning as inventors of the first ever ‘speed suits,’ to their partnerships with Olympians, World Champions and Pro Tour teams. Their innovative use of technology and fabric development has always set them apart from other cycling apparel manufacturers and their distinctive, individual style has won them committed fans around the world.

Over the last few years, the brand has evolved into something even bigger and better, something faster moving, even more exciting and totally unique. It’s so exciting to be a part of their development and be involved with all the new projects that they’re unveiling. The latest was no exception.

ASSOS Speed Club, as I’ve mentioned before, is a brand new enthusiast’s club that will give members access to rides, discounts, exclusive kit and events. There have been global happenings over the last month, with rides in LA, Switzerland and further afield. To kick things off in the UK, we unveiled the new Speed Club jersey and took a group of people out for a social spin through the Kent and Surrey countryside.

Though I don’t know if I should even say this, I was really surprised by the incredible turnout we had for the launch and the ride I was to lead. I guess I didn’t realise just how much people would want to go for a ride with me until I saw them all gathered in the store. Unfortunately, as there were so many people I didn’t actually get to chat to everyone as we had to split rides into smaller groups for safety reasons. If you were one of the people who came along and didn’t even get to say ‘Hi,’ I’m so sorry! Please come to the next one and make sure you’re in my group!

It was such a pleasure to go for a long ride in with so many friendly faces, both familiar and new to me. The weather just about held off, everyone got up Toy’s Hill and Brasted with its 16% max gradient AND we got to eat really great cake. It’s a shame I don’t know the name of the cafe because it was just my kind of place – the strange sounding but divine tasting parsnip cake was a beaut!

And did I mention that women outnumbered men? That makes me happiest of all, not because I hate men or something, but because it simply never happens unless you’re on a women’s specific ride. We hadn’t marketed the ride to either gender, just to cyclists yet the balance tipped in our favour. Here’s hoping we see greater numbers of women on ALL bike rides!
