Don’t read this if you are perfectly satisfied with your weight. If not, close your eyes and remember how much fun you had as a kid when you were riding your bicycle. Wouldn’t you feel ecstatic if you knew for a proven fact that bike cycling, in addition to being fun, could also help you lose weight and maintain a healthier weight as an adult?

In fact, bike cycling and weight loss are a natural winning combination! When riding your bike you get great cardiovascular benefits, while strengthening your leg muscles and buttocks, (provided you’re not just actually cycling for pleasure but pedaling consistently).

Depending on the speed you ride your bike, you can burn between 300-500 calories per hour on a bicycle. You can achieve even greater results when cycling uphill, since you will burn even more calories. On flat land, you can increase the resistance on your bike so you’ll have to pedal harder.

If you pedal on flat land, it would be a good idea to increase the intensity of your workout. Go faster and harder, then slow down to permit to your system to cool down. It has been scientifically proven that this kind of interval training will help you burn more calories and you will improve upon your cardiovascular system even more than if you ride with the same intensity throughout the entire workout.

You can easily lose a few pounds when bike cycling for weight loss, but what about if you are heavier?

Standard bikes can safely support 200-250 pounds because the tires, wheels and frames are only capable of supporting that much weight. If you weigh more than 250 pounds, you’ll be glad to know that they do make bicycles that can support up to 550 pounds. They are more expensive, but isn’t your safety worth it.

You can expect to shop for a good helmet, and workout clothing suitable for biking.  Some bikes will come already equipped with a water bottle and holster, and a chain and lock to secure your bike.

If you live in the city, you’ll want to avoid riding in heavy street traffic. If you can, choose scenic locations like parks or trails, or even less traveled streets with wide shoulders where pedestrians and bicycle riders will share the road.

During winter, don’t stop riding your bike. Do it in the comfort of your home. Go check out some of the stationary bicycles at your local sporting goods store? You will not believe how much manufacturers have improved upon the features of this exercise equipment. Do you know that some of them can measure your heart rate, blood pressure, calorie burn, speed, distance, and so on. And you can even become a bike potato watching your favorite tv show while burning a few hundred calories.
